Canto is a series of typefaces inspired by Edward M. Catich’s seminal thesis on the origins of the Roman inscriptional style, such as that found on Trajan’s column. Richard Lipton’s design traces the path from an expressive, preparatory Brush (with Brush Open to preserve gestural details at smaller sizes), through informal Pen, to the formal Roman. Classical capitals are accompanied by Lipton’s own calligraphic lowercase, small caps, and swashes.
His background as a professional calligrapher has always guided his work as a type designer. Despite the somewhat strict parameters within the discipline of type design, he feels there are no creative limits to the craft of letter-making. He continues to explore the endless nuance of giving expression to our alphabet. His foundry Lipton Letter Design develops original typefaces as well as custom font designs for international clients.
